When culinary heavyweights Tom Kitchin and Dominic Jack opened “The Scran and Scallie” in Stockbridge, great things were expected by the foodie community. Long term friends and business partners, and both being holders of Michelin stars they decided to open a gastro pub in the trendy Stockbridge area. It was to reflect the same “from nature to the plate” ethos as The Kitchin and Castle Terrace and serve fresh modern dishes alongside some Scottish classics such as sheep’s heid scotch broth. Reservations are possible but only for half the pub and the others are available for people just to walk in, it’s also possible to sit in the bar for local Scottish ale and wait for a table to become available.
Being huge fans of both The Kitchin and Castle Terrace, a joint venture from the two chefs sounded too good to be true. A birthday gave us the perfect opportunity to try the Scran and Scallie after hearing so much about it. We decided to book a table as it was a special occasion and were glad we had, even though it was a Tuesday the place was full. We instantly fell in love with the layout and décor of the place, the Scottish feel to the place was greatly appreciated and enjoyed by us both, this is a place we could imagine enjoying nice ale and eating great food in a relaxed environment.
A lunch menu at 3 courses for £15 from the caliber of chefs on show is a bargain so went for one lunch menu with 2 choices on each course and 3 courses from the a la carte menu, with starter prices beginning at £5.50, mains £9.50 and deserts £5.50.

Similar style of bread basket as the sister restaurants, being authentic and true to the Scottish theme.
The salad was served cold and was made up of an array of different tomatoes, a very simple but tasty start to the meal.

Mr SEO was desperate to try the traditional starter, with the flavours being incredibly rich and meaty. The dish was true to the Scottish classic and was served with more of the wholemeal bread.
The large juicy mussels, were served in a classic white wine garlic sauce. They were full of flavour and cooked to perfection.

The presentation of this main was apt for the surroundings, the meat patty was rich in flavour, with the juices running throughout, making it a delightful lunch time treat. The skinny fries were crisp and seasoned.
From the set lunch menu, this was a delightful conclusion to the meal. The meringues were crispy on the outside and lovely and soft in the centre. The simple dessert put a smile on our faces and was true to the British classic.
We are not the biggest fans of the term “Gastro pub” but at The Scran and Scallie they really do pull it off. We love what they are trying to do here and the food does the cosy dining room justice. Service was friendly and efficient and each person we spoke to was very knowledgeably about the food they were serving.
Our lunch for two came in at under £60 and that was with a cocktail for the birthday girl (which was also excellent), we felt that this was more than fair for a lunchtime treat, it could have been cheaper had we both went for the lunch menu but we were glad we got to sample a wider range of the menu.
