Staying outside Calistoga, we called the "vine" service bus, which took us from our site of Bothe Napa State Park into the quaint town for only a dollar each way. The driver detailed that our choice of tasting rooms would be vast. He was not wrong.
The Main Street of Downtown Calistoga is lined with small shops, restaurants, cafés and of course tasting rooms.
Having a lot to choose from, we opted for the Huge Bear tasting room due to the friendly welcome from the host. Kyle is an asset to this newly established tasting room.
Another reason we choose this tasting room was due to its recent entry into the downtown area, opening in February of this year.
This wine is whole-cluster pressed, fresh and vivid. A lovely start to the flight, this is also reasonably priced.
This wine is aged sur lie, rich, round and well balanced. Perfect accompany to fish.
Mrs SEO is not a red wine fan but this wine was different, it was much lighter and sweeter than the standard red wine. It was fantastically concentrated and had a real depth of complexity.
Ursa Gigantas is Latin for Huge Bear. This was a 18 month French oak aged, plush and very dense wine.
Wine 5: Special from the vault, 2010, Huge Bear Sonoma Country Cabernet Sauvignon.
This was a rich and dark red which Kyle himself said he had to take time to appreciate. This sealed our wine tasting.
We enjoyed the tasting flight here and learned a great deal about the wine of Napa valley. It finalised what was a great day of informative wine tasting.
